Commonly Asked Questions and Answers

Accounts

Listings are available to businesses and organizations with a physical location in Maine that serve travelers. This includes not-for-profit,
educational, and cultural institutions that provide value to visitors. Listings are not accepted for business-to-business services, and web-only
businesses are ineligible.

Companies, individuals, and organizations can only create listings for themselves. They cannot create or edit listings for others, unless they are
acting as official representatives of those businesses or organizations.

The response email might have been diverted to your SPAM folder or blocked by your email domain. As a first step, please check your SPAM folder to see
if you can find the notification email. If no response email is found, please email [email protected]. Please provide the email address and
organization name submitted for consideration in your request.

If you represent only one organization, you should generally only need to create one account. You can select multiple categories that apply to your
listing directing the content to populate in multiple locations on VisitMaine.com. If you feel multiple accounts are necessary for your unique
circumstance, please email [email protected].

If you represent multiple organizations (uncommon) there might be a need to create multiple accounts to keep all content management in separate
locations. This will ensure an easy transition to a new account manager if necessary and keep each organization’s content clearly defined from each
other.

To assign a single user to manage multiple accounts, please email [email protected] for assistance.

Business Listings

Business listings help visitors find businesses and services to enhance their experience while traveling in Maine. A Business listing is a webpage that includes essential information such as business descriptions, contact details, and links to the business website. Once added to VisitMaine.com, this content will appear as a full page when a website visitor searches for the business by name.

A preview of the Business Listing with a link to the full page will also populate in other locations throughout VisitMaine.com based on the categories selected when building the listing. For example, if a business listing for a Maine Guide selects kayaking, hunting, and fishing, the content will be automatically populated in pages with related articles or if a user filters for any of these activities.

Please Note: A business listing is different from article content on the website. The Maine Office of Tourism marketing team curates articles and the linked resources provided within them. If you find an article that you feel shares incorrect information or would benefit from changes, please email  [email protected]. Please provide specific details, including a link to the content and your proposed updates.

If you are sharing information about a unique business with offerings that change over time, you can change your business listing description as needed. This can include adding links directly in your listing description, separate from the main link provided in the listing. This will require approval for the change by MOT, but it is an easy and quick way to ensure that your listing shares the most relevant information with potential travelers.

Calendar Events

Event listings help visitors find events to enhance their experience while traveling in Maine.

The VisitMaine.com Event Calendar allows partners to promote special events, festivals, and activities that are of interest to a substantial majority of Maine visitors. This allows us to draw attention to unique events that showcase our state’s vibrant culture and attractions.

A calendar event is a webpage that includes essential information such as the event descriptions, contact details, and links to the event website.

A preview of the event with a link to the full event page will populate in the event calendar tool based on the categories selected when building the event.

The full event page will also appear as a full page when a website visitor searches for the event by name.

VisitMaine.com welcomes a wide range of events that reflect the spirit and culture of Maine, helping visitors experience Maine like a local. This includes everything from large, well-known, and beloved events to smaller community events such as farmers markets, festivals, and live music, as well as cultural experiences like workshops and historical talks. We ask that events meet the following criteria:

  • The event must be open to the public.
  • The event cannot be more than two weeks in duration.
  • The event must be in addition to or different from your normal product offerings.
  • The event cannot be a regularly scheduled offering (e.g., weekly or monthly events).
  • For an event series, please create one listing with multiple date ranges, rather than submitting separate events for each date.

Our goal is to feature unique, engaging events that provide value to travelers interested in exploring all that Maine has to offer.

Media

Contributors can include high-quality photos in their listings to enhance their appeal to travelers. Contributors are responsible for ensuring the image is high quality and confirming appropriate permissions and rights for any media submitted.

The Maine Office of Tourism recommends that all business listings, calendar events, and special offers include at least one high-quality image.

Images are presented in a 4:3 horizontal ratio for VisitMaine.com business and event listing photos. Photos taken with a phone or digital camera in their original uncropped horizontal form will typically fit this size ratio. The minimum image size should be 900 pixels X 675 pixels, but 1200 pixels X 900 pixels is ideal to ensure a high-quality appearance.
